Can u explain these 2 images from "The Ring"?

Remember Samara Morgan's cursed video from the movie "The Ring"? If

Anyhow, I pretty much understand the images in the vid' (as related to
the story), except for two: (1) The 'nail' standing by itself. (2) The
nail going all the way through the finger.

What is the significance of those two images?
