NBC & CBS Late-Night Lineups Down In Premiere Week, ABC On The Rise

Nine years ago, ABC brass were ready to dump Nightline for David Letterman. Boy, aren’t today’s bigwigs at the company happy that didn’t happen. The veteran ABC newsmagazine beat both CBS’ Late Show With David Letterman and NBC’s The Tonight Show With Jay Leno among adults 18-49 during premiere week for the first time ever. Nightline, which airs from 11:35 PM-midnight, saw its audience grow 7% vs. last fall to 3.9 million. In adults 19-49, it averaged 1.3 million, even with last year. Its companion, Jimmy Kimmel Live was also strong out of the gate, drawing its second-largest premiere week audience ever (1.8 million) and 790,000 adults 18-49, up 5%. In comparison, NBC’s Tonight Show With Jay Leno and CBS’ Late Show With David Letterman were neck-and-neck in 18-49 (1.07 million vs. 1.05 million) but both down double-digits, 20% (Leno) and 16% (Letterman). In total viewers, Leno (3.6 million) was off by 4%, Letterman (3.2 million) by 15%. CBS’ ratings declines carried over to the 12:35 AM shows. Somewhat surprisingly, NBC’s younger-skewingLate Night With Jimmy Fallon, which has had a great year capped by a first ever best music/comedy/variety series Emmy nomination, was down 16% in 18-49 to 695,000. CBS’Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson (607,000) was down a more modest 7%. NBC was hurt by a weaker prime time lead-in heading into local news. The network averaged a 2 demo rating in the 10:30 half-hour last week, vs. a 2.7 for ABC and CBS.

CBS, Fox split premiere week

New Girl grew to become Foxs top-ranked live-action fall laffer debut in ten years by scoring top demos and building on its lead-in from Glee. CBS The Large Bang Theory obtained by having an broadened episode.Though its rankings were less than many had guesstimated, two nights of solid, winning amounts from Fox's "The X Factor" were the determining element in premiere week, which saw the surging internet start a season because the leader among teenagers the very first time in the history. CBS were built with a strong week too, with Ashton Kutcher's debut on "2 . 5 Males" standing because the dominant No. 1 program and also the net's early-week dramas carrying out well. It finished a detailed second in 18-49, a good first in 25-54 and folded as always as a whole audiences. ABC went third, on componen with this past year, while 4th-place NBC was lower about 7%. Greatest story of premiere week needed to function as the comedy comeback, with half-hour laffers comprising nine from the frame's top ten nonsports shows in 18-49, based on Nielsen. And from Monday through Thursday, it had been new and coming back comedies which were the obvious standouts of every evening. Premiere week, obviously, typically includes some asterisks -- including broadened instances of hit shows like ABC's "Modern Family" and "Grey's Anatomy" and CBS' "Generate An Income Met Your Mother" and "The Large Bang Theory." Fox and NBC, however, stuck mostly for their regular skeds. As well as in the situation of CBS and Fox, their early-evening Sunday National football league overruns regularly skew year-to-year evaluations within the fall. CBS, for instance, loved a extended overrun last year, and was lower 6% in 18-49 this season without them Fox, however, saw its late-afternooon National football league action spill roughly half an hour into primetime this season, adding to its 31% gains versus. the outlet frame of 2010. Another component that needs to be looked at may be the elevated transmission degree of video recorders, with 42% from the Nielsen sample homes possessing DVRs in comparison with 38% last year. The "live-plus 7" amounts, including same-week Digital recording device playback, are required to again be larger than last fall -- according to preliminary "live-plus 3" amounts. Searching in the Nielsens for that week of Sept. 19-25, Fox brought in grown ups 18-49 having a 3.4 rating/9 be part of grown ups 18-49, then CBS (3.1/8), ABC (2.8/8) and NBC (2.6/8). CBS held the advantage over Fox in grown ups 25-54 (4.1/10 versus. 3.6/9) and came two million total audiences a lot more than its closer pursuer, ABC (12.a million to 9.9 million). Thanks mostly to Fox's healthy gains, the Large Four were up versus. premiere week last year in 18-49 rating (a combined 11.9 versus. 11.5) and total audiences (39.5 million versus. 39.3 million). Fox was most powerful at midweek, with "New Girl" bowing to winning demos on Tuesday (4.8/12 in 18-49, 10.28m). It built on its lead-in from "Glee" (4./11, 9.21m) and grew to become the net's top-ranked live-action fall comedy debut in ten years because of its part, "Glee" dropped from the top ten after starting off its second season last year because the No. 1 entertainment series in 18-49. "The X Factor" bowed to solid but underwhelming scores on Wednesday (4.4/12, 12.49m) and Thursday (4.3/12, 12.51m), lifting the internet to 18-49 victories on nights despite the fact that it wasn't near to "The American Idol ShowInch rankings territory. The Simon Cowell reality show provided Fox with considerably more powerful showings in premiere week than last year, lifting Wednesday by 52% and Thursday by 79%. CBS, that has now won premiere week in 25-54 and total audiences for 3 straight years, was paced by series levels for "2 . 5 Males" (10.7/25 in 18-49, 28.74m) -- the very best scores for any regular comedy on any internet in six years -- along with the preview of "2 Broke Women" that adopted it (7.1/16, 19.37m). Also Monday, "Generate An Income Met Your Mother" was up versus. this past year (5.2/13 in 18-49, 12.22m because of its 8:30 p.m. seg), as was Thursday's "The Large Bang Theory" (5.1/14, 14.94m at 8:30). CBS saw its two "NCIS" shows grow year upon year, using the original the week's No. 1 drama (4.3/12, 19.96m), and "Criminal Minds" increased on Wednesday (4.1/10, 14.14m). Among new dramas, "Memorable" brought its Tuesday hour (2.9/8, 14.09m) and also the internet did Comfortable with its bows of "Person of great interestInch on Thursday (3.1/8, 13.33m) and "A Gifted Guy" on Friday (1.4/5, 9.45m).ABC saw "DwtsInch return noticeably cooler (4./10, 19.03m) however the 10 p.m. dramas airing after it both nights -- "Castle" and "Body of Proof" -- organized well. Internet saw similar results on Sunday, once the new "Pan Am" (3.1/8, 11.06m) impressed behind a decreasing "Desperate Average women." ABC's best evening was Wednesday, where "Modern Family" hit a set high (6.2/15, 14.52m), supplying a great lead-set for new cleaning soap "Revenge" (3.3/9, 10.02m) -- a large improvement over last year's "The Entire Truth." NBC were built with a pretty quiet premiere week, using its the best results coming Thursday with "WorkInch (3.9/10 in 18-49, 7.64m) leading into new comedy "Whitney" (3.3/8, 6.84m). Also, new Wednesday comedy "Up Through The Night" worked out OK in the regular-slot bow (2.4/7, 6.05m). "Sunday Evening Football," meanwhile, was the week's No. 2 show (8.3/21, 20.36m), up versus. this past year. Not faring so hot were the bows of 10 p.m. dramas "The Playboy Club" on Monday (1.6/4, 5.02m) and "Prime Suspect" on Thursday (1.8/5, 6.05m). CW was brought by Thursday's "Vampire Journals" (1.2/3, 2.52m) and "Secret Circle" (.9/3, 2.12m), both lower versus. their early premieres. Although it was broadcast's large week, cable did claim three of primetime's top 25 shows in grown ups 18-49: "Monday Evening Football" at No. 9 (4.8/13), the Charlie Sheen "Comedy Central Roast" at No. 22 (3.8/9, 6.43m) and "Jersey Shoreline" at No. 24 (3.5/9, 6.49m). Box Office Report: 'Lion King' Rules 'Moneyball' and 'Dolphin Tale'

Because the number-crushing figures in 'Moneyball' could let you know, a player's stats don't always mesh together with his actual generating energy. Indeed, 'Moneyball' was preferred to win this area office competition a few days ago, however the contest saw the three dimensional version of 'The Lion King' repeat at No. 1, generating an believed $22.a million and fending from the Kaira Pitt-brought baseball flick and three other beginners -- 'Dolphin Tale,' 'Abduction,' and 'Killer Elite.' Still, it had been a detailed game. Studio estimations put 'Lion King' just $1.5 million in front of 'Moneyball,' which, consequently, only agreed to be $300,000 in front of 'Dolphin Tale.' Actually, the overall game might have to get into extra innings (meaning, we might have to hold back until final figures are launched Monday) before a obvious ranking of first, second and third place becomes apparent. 'Lion King' have been likely to drop about 40 % from last weekend's three dimensional debut, to around $17 or $18 million, because of the family-audience competition from 'Dolphin Tale.' However it ended up just 27 percent after getting centered this area office all week. In ten days, the re-release has gained $61.7 million. Over its lifetime, the 1994 Disney classic has gained $390.two million in United States theaters along with a worldwide total of $858.a million, which makes it the very best hands-attracted animated movie of-some time and the 3rd greatest-grossing animated feature ever. 'Moneyball' have been likely to win the weekend with around $18 or $19 million, so despite its second-place finish, its $20.six million take is really much better than expected. Kaira Pitt usually can open a film towards the tune around $24 million, but there have been fears that the movie largely about baseball statistics might appear dry and esoteric to mass audiences. Nevertheless, the film gained the best reviews of the season for any wide-release movie, even drumming up Oscar buzz for Pitt. It is also the greatest-grossing opening ever for any movie about baseball, outscoring 2006's 'The Benchwarmers' ($19.7 million). 'Dolphin Tale' also outperformed forecasts, that have been within the $14 to $16 million range. Credit its $20.3 million finish to higher-than-expected reviews, excellent word-of-mouth, a release pattern that incorporated many three dimensional screens along with a specific advertising campaign that centered on religious moviegoers and families that home-school their kids. Opening in 4th place by having an believed $11.two million (a little less than forecasts of $12 to $13 million), 'Abduction' ongoing to prove the 'Twilight' franchise stars are dangerous box office allures movies that do not feature sparkly vampires of the underworld and shirtless werewolves. Granted, Rachelle Lefervre goes shirtless within this teen spy thriller frequently enough to place the abs in 'Abduction,' however the movie's strong word-of-mouth among teen women wasn't enough to beat almost all negative reviews. Besides, it had competition for that action/thriller crowd from 'Killer Elite,' which opened up in fifth place by having an believed $9.5 million. That's by what was expected, despite the fact that the film boasts the star energy of Jason Statham, Clive Owen and Robert P Niro. Despite being loosely with different true story (and this is not on the Mike Peckinpah film 'The Killer Elite'), a film by which Statham plays an assassin seeking payback most likely appeared a tad too been-there-done-that to use it moviegoers. Mediocre pre-release buzz stored the film from opening even while high as Statham's similar 'The Mechanic' ($11.4 million) from the couple of several weeks ago. Watch a clip for 'The Lion King 3D' The entire top ten: 1. 'The Lion King,' $22.a million (2,330 screens), $61.7 million total 2. 'Moneyball,' $20.six million (2,993), era 3. 'Dolphin Tale,' $20.3 million (3,507), era 4. 'Abduction,' $11.two million (3,118), era 5. 'Killer Elite,' $9.5 million (2,986), era 6. 'Contagion,' $8.5 million (3,136), $57.a million 7. Wanda Sykes: I Had Breast Cancer

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Wanda Sykes is known for cracking jokes, but during a visit to The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she revealed something very serious. I had breast cancer, Wanda told Ellen in an episode of her talk show airing Monday. Yeah, I know its scary. It is. I found it though. The star explained that she discovered the cancer when she went in for a cosmetic procedure. I was having a breast reduction, actually. This was in February. I went for the reduction, she continued. I had real big boobs and I just got tired of knocking over stuff. Every time I eat, Oh lord, Id carry a Tide stick everywhere I go. My back was sore so it was time to have a reduction. Despite the scare, Wanda said she was very, very lucky. It wasnt until after the reduction that in the lab work, the pathology, that they found that I had DCIS in my left breast DCIS is basically stage zero cancer. So I was very lucky. But cancer is cancer, Wanda told Ellen. I had the choice of, you can go back every three months and get it checked. Have a mammogram, MRI every three months just to see what its doing. But, Im not good at keeping on top of stuff. Im sure Im overdue for an oil change and a teeth cleaning already. I have a lot of breast cancer history on my Mothers side of the family, which I didnt know about. The funnylady, who is the mother to 2-year-old twins Olivia and Lucas with her wife Alex, was faced with a tough decision. I had both breasts removed and because now I have zero chance of having breast cancer, she explained. It sounds scary up front, but what do you want? Do you want to wait and not be as fortunate when it comes back and its too late. Wanda who is not known for holding her tongue, said she was a bit reluctant to speak out about her battle with cancer. I was like, I dont know, should I talk about it or what? How many things could I have? Im black, then Lesbian. I cant be the poster child for everything, she said with a laugh. At least with the LGBT issues we get a parade, we get a float, its a party. I was real hesitant about doing this because, I hate walking. I got a lot of walks coming up! Matt Damon Can get His Jerry Maguire Moment in First Trailer for 'We Bought a Zoo'

Because you can frequently hear, Scarlett Johansson gets a difficult Wednesday. Fortunately, better days are coming -- no less than properly. Knowing within the lately release trailer for 'We Bought a Zoo,' Johansson and co-star Matt Damon may have a sizable, body body fat holiday hit about the hands come December. Directed by Cameron Crowe -- that has not helmed a fiction film since 'Elizabethtown' bottomed out his career in 2005 -- 'We Bought a Zoo' is founded on Benjamin Mee's memoir, which recounts his attempts to rebuild carrying out a dying of his wife. (With 'Zoo' and 'The Descendants,' the holiday season is chock-a-block with forlorn fathers.) For Mee, that incorporated purchasing a run-lower zoo inside the British countryside and moving their along with his youthful children for Movie Mee (Damon), meaning buying a zoo inside the California countryside and giving his kids an "authentic American experience." It might seem contrived -- and reviews of Mee's memoir were mixed -- nevertheless the trailer hums along concerning the charm of Damon, Johansson, Thomas Haden Chapel as well as the Sigur Ros song 'Hoppípolla' (that you simply remember within the trailer for 'Children of Men' Sigur Ros frontman Jónsi is scoring 'Zoo'). If you're still not convinced from the chance of 'Zoo,' realize that a clip includes a 'Jerry Maguire'-like moment when Damon quits his job, 'Almost Famous' star Patrick Fugit and adorable zoo animals. Shirley MacLaine Joins Italian/Jewish Romeo and Juliet Film - But Who As?

Just when you’d written your last letter to Juliet and cleaned up your star-crossed gnomes, in comes one more retooled Romeo and Juliet called The Locals. In the upcoming indie, director/writer Sue Kramer treats the Montagues and Capulets to “a Jewish/Italian twist.” Shirley MacLaine, who just titillated us with fabulous anecdotes at the LA Film Festival, is the first cast in the film, and Vera Farmiga and Alan Arkin are in talks to join her. But who will she play? Though I’m expecting MacLaine to play a house matriarch, I’m hoping she suits up for a kooky, Luhrmann-like version of Friar Lawrence. Can we feather her up, deck her in pearled rosaries, and give her a bulky clutch for transferring messages between Romeo and Juliet? Talk about Postcards from the Edge. In fact, I want the line, “Talk about Postcards from the Edge” inserted during a key scene. In fact, I’d read a celebrity biography called Wherefore art thou, Debra Winger? FYI. The Graveyard Keeper's Daughter (Surnuaiavahi tutar)

An Estinfilm, Content Providers production. (International Sales: Estinfilm, Tallinn, Estonia.). Produced by Mati Sepping. Co-producer, Katrin Laur. Directed, written by Katrin Laur. With: Kerttu-Killu Grenman, Maria Avdjushko, Rain Simmul, Ulla Reinikainen, Epp Eespaev, Esther Koiv, Eva Klemets, Kersti Kreismann. (Estonian, Russian dialogue)A child's unwavering gaze, neither blindly accepting nor especially judgmental, anchors Estonian helmer Katrin Laur's "The Graveyard Keeper's Daughter," a pastoral tale of alcoholism and neglect. By all civilized standards, 8-year-old Lucia qualifies as a child at risk, with a largely absent father and chronically drunken mother. Yet, blithely frolicking around the titular burying grounds, accompanied by her angel, a younger girl with Downs Syndrome, Lucia fashions a satisfying existence from the cards dealt her, protecting her autonomy from well-meaning adults. The stylistic fluidity of the pic's evocative fairy-tale tropes trumps any sociological overlay, increasing "Graveyard"s arthouse appeal. Little Lucia (Kerttu-Killu Grenman) voluntarily cares for Jats (Esther Koiv), a neighbor's Down Syndrome child whose resemblance to the statue of an angel at the center of the cemetery makes her puppy-dog devotion seem even more special. Lucia also uncomplainingly looks after her mother Maria (Maria Avdjushko) in the aftermath of her nocturnal drunken card games at their stone house nestled deep in the woods. Her father Kaido (Rain Simmul), though happy to teach her to drive (she takes the controls of the graveyard pickup truck, gleefully perched on his lap), otherwise foists all parental obligation onto his alcoholic wife, denying any knowledge of how to care for a girl child. Yet Lucia seems none the worse for her precocious self-sufficiency, particularly leavened as it is by an elemental openness to the vibrant nature around her. Helmer Laur and lenser Annsi Leino transform Lucia's graveyard into a secret garden, a magical place of nocturnal mystery and daylight communion whose blood-deep natural cycles render the inevitable process of socialization quietly tragic. But when Kaido and his family are invited to spend a week in Finland, staying with a friendly female pastor (Ulla Reinikainen), the vacation first seems as a potential game-changer. Maria and the pastor share drinks, confidences in Russian (apparently Maria's native tongue) and kick up their heels, falling over each other in tipsy communion. This reminder of the girl she once was inspires Maria to resolve to stop drinking, while Kaido dreams of a decently paying permanent job. Indeed the visit opens each parent's eyes to the possibility of other options, none of which outlast the trip back to Estonia. Meanwhile, the arrival of a young, by-the-book teacher (apparently the only person in Estonia not hitting the bottle), concerned over Lucia's low grades, threatens to topple the girl's carefully balanced house of cards, when a disaster of epic proportions (and impressive FX) renders all options moot.Camera (color), Anssi Leino; editor, Kersti Miilen; music, Part Uusberg; art director, Eugen Tamberg; costume designer, Tamberg; sound (Dolby), Ants Andreas; sound designers, Tiina Andreas, Matis Rei.
