Hunger Games teaser arrives

You might think MTV's Music Video Awards are simply an excuse for a ballroom full of braying stars to get stuck into a free bar. Well of course that's all part of it, but every so often the audience is treated to a mouth-watering nugget of previewy goodness.Last night's ceremony provided one such tidbit in the form of the first official teaser trailer for upcoming teen saga The Hunger Games. Introduced by star Jennifer Lawrence, it gives us a first look at her character in action, with young Katniss clearly pretty handy with a bow and arrow.Take a look at the footage below... With the film currently in the midst of production, it's perhaps understandable that the footage on display is a little slight, but we can at least confirm that Lawrence looks the part for the all-action role.In case you've been living under a rock these past few months, The Hunger Games tells the story of a future society in which a war-ravaged America has been split into a number of districts. Each district must provide two teenagers to compete in a fight to the death, a brutal televised event known as The Hunger Games. The film is set to hit UK screens on 23 March 2012. Hopefully we'll get a look at a proper trailer sooner rather than later.

Eye about the Mideast: Fest adds Africa-savvy curator

For Rasha Salti, the festival's recently produced position of programmer for African and Middle Eastern Cinema in Feb could not came her way in a more exciting time for that huge and varied motion picture region."Using the revolutions over the Middle East, individuals are waiting to determine how it is going to affect cinema," she states from her Beirut homebase. Despite a couple of key regional festivals canceled this season, Salti states, "There is a new political horizon for each country, and major conversations are happening inside the condition institutions that sponsor filmmaking and festivals."Salti has designed a from-the-revolutionary-frontlines Egyptian omnibus pic slotted in Mavericks, an Iraqi docu, two from The other agents, two from Lebanon (including Variety's 2008 Director to look at Nadine Labaki's sophomore pic "Where Will We Go Ahead Now?Inch) along with a Tunisian film that they views an ideal illustration of the "crazy but completely captivating tales" she's experiencing in Africa. On the planet-preeming "Almost Brando," Tunisian cinema master Ridha Behi melds his story of finding youthful Brando look-alike Anis Raache -- "the spitting picture of the guy in the 20s," Salti claims -- and experiencing Brando themself in your own home (with suggestions for a script as well as an oxygen tank) only a couple of several weeks prior to the Hollywood legend's dying."There's something really exciting happening in African cinema," Salti states. "I believe it is a reaction that'll be sustained -- as Europe stopped being thinking about Africa and European producers switched their back about the industry, I suspect African filmmakers have began to create the flicks they would like to make." Raimi Previews Oz The Great & Powerful

Concept art and more shown off at D23When you've only just started shooting on your latest film, rustling up something interesting to show people can be a daunting challenge. But it was one that Sami Raimi was willing to tackle for a presentation at this weekend's D23 Expo. Since he's knee-deep in production in Detroit, Raimi could only send a video message to the Disney convention from the set of Oz The Great and Powerful. But he also provided an early glimpse of what the film might look like, with concept art and rough footage from the first day's shooting interspersed with sound bites from the cast, including James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, Zach Braff and Rachel Weisz. As Raimi mentioned in the video, the aim for the film is to take the descriptions of Oz used by L Frank Baum in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and bring them to life with all the technological tricks of modern filmmaking. So we were treated to lush imagery of rolling hills, mountains that resembled elephant heads and scary forests, all boasting the iconic yellow brick road. And while very little is actually in the can, there was a quick glimpse of Franco plying his trade as a dodgy carnival magician, a man who has an eye for the ladies. "He's bit of a con, a bit of a Lothario and a seducer," Franco explains in the video. "When he gets to Oz, it's a chance to redeem himself. One quick shot of Franco preparing to step into a storm with the words "Let's go make some magic" wrapped things up. Naturally, it's far too early to tell what the final product will look like, or how effective it will be, but there certainly seemed to be a lot of ambition on display...

The Great Food Truck Race Season 2: Meet the Trucks

Tyler Florence, Great Food Truck Race The Great Food Truck Race revs up for its second season on Sunday (10/9c on Food Network). This time, everything's bigger (well, maybe not host Tyler Florence: Eight trucks (one more than last season) will compete for $100,000, which is double the prize money from the show's first outing. The mobile food purveyors will start in Malibu, Calif., then try their hand at selling to the crowds in Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Denver, a little town called Manhattan in Kansas, Memphis, Atlanta and finally end up in Miami. Now that the competitors have had a chance to see the first season of The Great Food Truck Race, it'll be interesting to see if they've learned about marketing and resourcefulness as part of their food-selling strategy. What's on your Watchlist? Create one and add favorites like The Great Food Truck Race Let's check out the eight trucks: Cafe Con Leche (@CubanCafeMobile)- Cuban cuisine -- coffee, sandwiches and desserts -- made "con mucho amor" sounds like a delicious and solid food concept with easy-to-make products. We'll see if the catchphrase "Fuacata!" gains in popularity after the show debuts. Devilicious (@DeviliciousFood) - This San Diego-based truck specializes in twisted, adult comfort food. We don't see how you can go wrong with butter-poached lobster grilled cheese or a BBBLT. The extra B's stand for extra bacon of course. Comfort food is always a winner, but adding that bit of decadence adds fun to the experience. Hodge Podge (@HodgePodgeTruck) - This wishy-washy name and its rather hard-to-define food concept could be problematic from a marketing standpoint, but ex-Clevelander Chef Chris Hodgson has already had success with his Asian food truck Dim Sum and Den Sum, so we wouldn't count him out. Almost anything goes for this comfort food truck, and that includes topping BBQ-sauced hot dogs with bacon, purple cabbage slaw and tater tots. Korilla BBQ (@KorillaBBQ) - This mobile Korean grill already has a strong following in New York City, but can these Korean grillmasters convince less cosmopolitan palates across the nation to eat bulgogi or tofu burrittos? They may run into challenges sourcing their proteins as well -- their pork and chicken is usually hormone and antibiotic free, they're used to using certified Angus beef and they make their own tofu. Check out the rest of today's news The Lime Truck (@TheLimeTruck) - This Orange County-based truck's motto is, "Crisp. Refreshing. California Beach Cuisine." Chef Jason Quinn worked under Kerry Simon for a while and has created an ever-changing menu that has included the Yum Yum Lamb Sandwich and the Jane's Addiction Quesadilla. He's pretty wacky too, which could make for some fun marketing ploys out on the streets. Roxy's Grilled Cheese (@RoxysGrilledChz) - Chef James DeSabatino launched this truck in Boston in March. All you really need to know is that it specializes in gourmet grilled cheese. We can't see how that could go wrong unless there's no bread or cheese available. Seabirds (@SeabirdsTruck) - Also from the O.C., this truck has an uber-healthy point of view, which we support but wonder if it could run into problems finding the proper ingredients. It uses local produce and top quality, organic ingredients to make organic vegan food. Yes, you read correctly: Vegan, as in no meat, no dairy, no honey, nothing that's part of or has been produced by animals. As if that weren't a hard enough sell to the general public, the ladies also provide gluten-free and raw-food options. Will America be open to eating cashew ricotta? Sky's Gourmet Tacos (@SkysTacos) - "Southwest meets Louisiana" and "Mexican food with a splash of soul" both sound like flavorful, easy sells. The taco and burrito food-delivery system is by far the most pervasive and convenient in the food truck world and lends itself to a wide range of fillings and flavors, including vegetarian options. Which truck has the best chance? Which cuisine would you like to try? Check out a preview of Season 2 of The Great Food Truck Race (Sunday, 10/9c on Food Network):

Watercooler: Is the Bachelor Pad a Hot Property?

Bachelor Pad Even in the heat of August, there's still some trash that just smells like roses. Oh come on, you know you love it. Ever since ABC announced that it was bringing back last summer's Bachelor Pad, fans of the dating-and-mating series have been salivating over the drama being drummed up for round 2. After all, just the reunion of notorious exes (and famewhores) Jake Pavelka and Vienna Girardi was enough of a reason to toss aside your rational thought and take a peek. Would she cry? Yes. Would he try to excuse his hateful behavior during their televised break-up? Over and over. Would the rest of the house be able to compare? You betcha. Clearly, the producers realized that Pad needs more than just the mess that was (and still is) these two, so they went and found 16 others to throw into the mix, including Vienna's current beau, Kasey - he of the Schmoo voice and hideous wrist tattoo from Ali's season; his former foe Justin, the wrestler also known as Rated R; swimsuit nitwit Gia, who thinks the Trojan Horse was a "giant elephant"; Brad Womack's lap-dancing, crazy-eyed suitor Michelle Money; some haggard princess from the royal snooze season; and Ashley Hebert's recent toss-offs Ames, Blake and William. Add a few random franchise faces, several ill-advised alliances, lots of skin and very little intelligence and, folks, we have a hormonal hot-tub horror that is gonna be a joy to behold! How host Chris Harrison can handle this crew and keep them from tearing one another apart once the competition heats up is beyond us. Honestly, we kind of fear for his life. So, now that we have come clean with our secret shame, it's time for you to pipe up. Did you check-in to Bachelor Pad? What did you think of the first two eliminees? Or do you think the whole place should be condemned? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

Lionsgate swings to profit

Despite a $65 million drop in revenue, Lionsgate reported net income of $12.2 million for its fiscal first quarter, swinging into the black from last year's first-quarter loss of $64.1 million. Both its decreased revenue and profitability defied Wall Street, which had expected net losses but not a 20% drop in revenues.Reasons varied from reduced theatrical marketing costs to an uptick in TV business, but the Canadian company couldn't resist pointing out its "decreased costs associated with shareholder activism," no doubt a reference to the company's highly public battle with corporate raider Carl Icahn, who sought to gain a dominant stake in the company for much of last year.Lionsgate also attributed $4.8 million in profits to its share in cable channel EPIX, which contributed to a $12 million loss in last year's first quarter.Net income per common share in Q1 reached $.09 on 137 million weighted average common shares outstanding. Last year's first quarter saw a basic net loss per common share of $.54 on 118.2 million weighted average common shares."Our rapid and accelerating transition from traditional to new digital businesses, both domestically and internationally, is helping to drive our progress and positioning us for future growth, and we're very excited about our upcoming slates that highlight our momentum in building new film and TV franchises as well as extending our existing brands," said Lionsgate co-chairman and CEO Jon Feltheimer. Hot Trailer: Andrew Niccol's 'In Time'

Fox and New Regency put up a trailer this weekend for In Time, the Andrew Niccol-directed futuristic science fiction thriller that takes place in a world where people who want to live beyond 25 have to purchase time. The protagonist's clock is about to run out when a rich guy tired of living gives away his time. Niccol used a similar plot driver in his 1997 directorial debut Gattaca, where Ethan Hawke got the chance to escape his dreary home planet and got a shot at space travel despite inferior genetics, when an elite athlete whose body is ruined (Jude Law) gives him his ticket off the planet. It worked well in that movie and In Time gives Justin Timberlake an opportunity to move from romantic comedies to action terrain in a movie career that so far has been a pleasant surprise. Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Wilde and Cillian Murphy also star in a film that opens October 28.

Snooki Dishes On Her Italian Accident & Contracting The Acting Bug

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Snooki and the Jersey Shore gang will invade TVs across America tonight as the premiere of the shows fourth season (which takes place in Florence, Italy) debuts on MTV, and the pint sized reality star says that although visiting Italy was fun, she wont miss doing battle with the cobblestone streets of the historic locale. [The cobblestones] sucked! Like, walking to the club in your heels?! Snooki born Nicole Polizzi exclaimed to Access Hollywood during a junket for the shows upcoming season in Seaside, NJ, on Thursday. Even Ron [fell] and he doesnt even wear heels, she added, referencing her Shore co-star, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro. [The girls] looked like baby deer when they walk in their heels on the cobblestones, Ronnie who was also present for the junket added with a laugh, while giving his best wobbling deer impersonation. They were like, falling everywhere. It was awesome. In addition to Florences menacing sidewalks, Snooki faced a more serious problem during the casts Italian adventure. The self-proclaimed Princess of Poughkeepsie was involved in a car accident while in Florence filming earlier this year, which prompted rumors of a possible publicity stunt a claim Snooki said is ridiculous. Why would I do that on purpose?! Snooki told Access. I dont get what people say sometimes! Get real. The Fiats, they had a lot of miles on them, theyre old cars its different than driving an American stick [shift] so it was hard to get used to that, she explained. But my brakes gave out [Expletive] happens, and I couldnt control it, she added. It was an accident. Luckily, no serious injuries were sustained in the wreck, but the reality star did lose her permit to drive in the foreign country. I got my license taken away, Snooki said. And even if I didnt, I still wouldnt drive because that was traumatizing. As for what the cast missed the most while abroad, both Snooki and Ronnie agreed they felt lost without their famous GTL (gym, tan, laundry) lifestyle. Me and Snooki would go [to the gym] and it [would] take us like almost a half hour to get there, Ronnie told Access. By the time wed get there wed look at each other and be like, All right lets go home and just go out. We [didnt] even want to work out. So we did GTL times 10 [when we got back to the states], Snooki added. We went tanning like twice a day. We all got burnt. Beyond sunburns and workouts, the hilarious cast recently filmed a cameo in the upcoming Farrelly brothers Three Stooges reboot and the experience infected both Snooki and Ronnie with the acting bug. I wasnt nervous at all, Snooki told Access of her time on the films set. The fact that we enjoy it and were not scared to like, be stupid or make fun of ourselves I think we could be good in acting. I would love to do comedy, she added. Journey to Italy with the Jersey Shore gang when Season 4 premieres tonight at 10PM on MTV.Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc. Still, he didn't eliminate a follow up at this time, stating that he wasn't capable of tell at this time around if you will see one. "We are determining that in the end," he stated. Sources had formerly told The Hollywood Reporter that Warner Bros. wasn't quitting on the follow up.
